Car Cameras for Back and Rear Dash Cam Recording

A rear dash cam should capture traffic behind without losing detail through tinted or heated glass. Start with compatibility and mounting position, then compare resolution.

A car camera for back recording documents the traffic behind you; it is not automatically a reversing aid. A back dash cam mounted high inside the rear window usually gives the cleanest road view, while an external camera can suit vans or vehicles with obstructed glass.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

Is a back dash cam worth having?

Rear footage can document a tail impact or events behind the vehicle that a front camera misses. Its value is highest when the lens has a clear view and the system records both channels reliably.

Can I add a rear camera to any dash cam?

No. Rear modules normally use brand- and model-specific connections, recording modes and firmware. Use the compatibility list for your exact front camera.

Where should a rear dash cam go?

Mount it high and near the centre of the rear glass when possible, outside the main sweep of visual obstructions. Test the image before permanently routing the cable.

Does a rear dash cam work through tinted glass?

It can, but dark tint reduces the light reaching the sensor and may affect night detail. Review sample footage from the installed position before relying on it.
