Ethernet WiFi Extenders for Wired Devices and Access Points

An extender’s Ethernet port may connect a wired device to WiFi, or support access point mode through a wired router connection. Check the model’s stated modes.

An Ethernet WiFi extender can solve two different problems. In range-extender mode, a wired port can connect a television, console or computer to the extender; in access point mode, a cable from the router lets the unit provide WiFi over a wired link. Check which mode the product supports, because a port alone does not prove it can act as an AP.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

Can I connect Ethernet to a WiFi extender?

Many models include an Ethernet port, but its function varies. It may bridge a wired client onto the extended network, and some models also support wired access point operation.

Can an Ethernet WiFi extender create a new access point?

Some can. TP-Link lists Access Point mode for the RE550, which connects to a wired network and provides WiFi; verify that the specific model has this mode.

Does a WiFi extender Ethernet port provide Gigabit speed?

Not always. Check the port specification: some models list Gigabit Ethernet, while others use a slower Fast Ethernet port.

Is a wired access point better than a wireless extender?

A wired access point avoids relying on a wireless backhaul between it and the router. It requires an Ethernet run and compatible setup, so the best option depends on the home layout.
