Infrared Cooking Thermometers for Food and Kitchen Surfaces

Infrared thermometers are best for fast surface checks on pans, griddles and ovens. They do not measure the internal temperature of meat unless the tool also includes a contact probe.

An infrared cooking thermometer reads emitted energy from a surface, making it quick for a skillet, pizza stone, griddle or cooling zone. It is not an internal meat thermometer: the beam does not reveal the centre temperature of a steak, chicken breast or roast.

Can You Use an Infrared Thermometer on Food?

Yes, an infrared thermometer can check food and cookware surfaces quickly. It cannot read through food, so use a contact probe to confirm the centre of meat, poultry and reheated dishes.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

What is an infrared thermometer used for in cooking?

It quickly checks surface temperatures, such as a pan, griddle, pizza stone or the top of a liquid. It does not measure the centre of food.

Can an infrared thermometer be used for meat?

Use it only for the meat's surface. A penetration probe is still needed to verify the internal temperature.

Why does an infrared thermometer struggle with shiny pans?

Reflective surfaces have low emissivity and can reflect surrounding infrared energy. Follow the instrument instructions and use a suitable contact method when accuracy matters.

Is an infrared food thermometer with a probe more useful?

It covers two different jobs: infrared for surfaces and the probe for internal readings. Check each sensor's range and cleaning instructions separately.
