Tesla Dashcam: Storage, Settings and Troubleshooting

Tesla Dashcam uses the vehicle's cameras and a compatible USB drive. If it shows unavailable, check the drive, format, TeslaCam folder and data-capable USB port first.

Tesla Dashcam records from the vehicle's built-in cameras to a compatible USB drive. For the simplest setup, insert the drive into a port that supports video data and use Controls, Safety, Format USB Drive; the vehicle creates the required TeslaCam folder and formats the drive as exFAT.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

Why is Dashcam unavailable in my Tesla?

The vehicle may not recognize a compatible, correctly formatted USB drive in a data-capable port. Check the port, available space, format and TeslaCam folder, then consult the owner manual for your model and software version.

What format should a Tesla Dashcam drive use?

Tesla's current Model 3 manual supports automatic exFAT formatting and also lists supported manual formats. Using the in-car Format USB Drive control is the clearest route when available.

How much storage does Tesla Dashcam need?

Tesla specifies a minimum capacity of 64 GB and advises using as much available storage as possible. Retention still depends on saved events, Sentry clips and other files.

How long does Tesla Dashcam keep recordings?

Recent clips are continuously overwritten unless saved. Tesla states that RecentClips contains up to 60 minutes, while saved and Sentry clips remain until removed or storage management applies.

How do I play Tesla Dashcam footage?

Saved clips can be viewed on the vehicle touchscreen, in supported app workflows or on a computer. Encrypted clips require the vehicle or Tesla's browser-based decryption process described in the manual.
