Car Cameras for Backing Up: What to Choose

A true backup camera gives a live rear view when reversing; a rear dash cam mainly records. Choose the system according to the job you need it to do.

A car camera for backing up should provide a clear, correctly oriented live view when you select reverse. That is different from a rear-facing dashcam, which is designed primarily to record the road behind you.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

Can a dash cam be used as a backup camera?

Only if the model provides a suitable live rear-camera view with the orientation and switching behaviour needed for reversing. Recording alone does not make a dash cam a safe substitute for a backup camera.

Do wireless backup cameras need wiring?

Yes. Wireless usually describes the video connection; the camera and monitor still need power, and reverse-trigger wiring may also be required.

Where should a backup camera be mounted?

Mount it near the vehicle centreline with an unobstructed view, following the camera maker's instructions. Verify that the image does not misrepresent distance or cover the licence plate.

What matters most at night?

Look for usable low-light performance, a clean lens position and a display that remains readable without excessive glare. Reversing lamps and installation angle also affect the visible scene.
