Guide

Where to Install a Dashcam in Your Car

Mount the front camera high on the windshield, usually near the rear-view mirror, while preserving the driver's view and keeping clear of factory sensors. Frame road and horizon before fixing it permanently.

Where to Install a Dashcam in Your Car
01

Where should a front dashcam be installed?

Choose a high position near the rear-view mirror that gives the lens a clear sweep of road while keeping the device outside the driver's critical view. Stay clear of dotted ceramic areas if the mount maker requires smooth glass, and do not cover a forward safety-camera housing.

02

Check the view before attaching the mount

Power the camera temporarily and open its preview. Centre the road, include enough horizon to avoid a dashboard-heavy frame and confirm that wipers clear the lens area in rain or snow.

03

Clean and secure the windshield mount

Follow the camera maker's cleaning and temperature instructions. Let the glass dry, press the mount evenly and avoid loading it with cable tension while its adhesive settles.

04

Route the power cable around airbags

Run the lead along stable trim without crossing a curtain-airbag deployment path. Keep it away from pedals, steering components, sharp metal, seat tracks and moving hinges; seek professional help if the A-pillar layout is unclear.

05

Where should a rear dashcam go?

Place it high and central on the rear glass where the wiper clears, if available. On a hatchback, allow enough flexible cable for the hatch to move without pulling or trapping the lead.

06

Verify the finished recording

Record a short drive in daylight and after dark. Check reflections, number-plate exposure, vibration and whether any trim or heating line dominates the rear image, then make small adjustments while parked.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

Where is the best place to install a dash cam?

High on the windshield near the rear-view mirror is usually practical, provided the camera does not block vision or interfere with sensors. The lens must remain in a wiper-cleared area.

Should a dashcam be on the driver or passenger side?

Choose the side that keeps the device least intrusive while preserving access to controls and a centred road view. Vehicle mirror and sensor layouts determine the better side.

Can a dash cam be mounted on the dashboard?

Only if the manufacturer permits that orientation and the mount remains secure without obstructing visibility. Windshield mounting is more common because it gives the lens a higher view.

Where should I install a rear dash cam?

High and near the centre of the rear glass, with the lens in a cleared viewing area. Leave safe cable movement for a hatch or liftgate.
