What Is a G-Sensor on a Dash Cam and How Does It Work?

A dash cam G-sensor detects sudden acceleration, braking or impact and tells the camera to protect the related clip from ordinary loop overwriting. It does not identify fault or guarantee that footage is usable.

What Is a G-Sensor on a Dash Cam and How Does It Work?
01

What is a G-sensor on a dash cam?

A G-sensor is an accelerometer that measures changes in movement along multiple axes. When a change crosses the camera's threshold, the dash cam marks or locks the associated recording so routine loop recording is less likely to overwrite it.

02

What happens when the sensor detects an impact?

The camera usually saves the current segment in an event folder or applies a protected-file flag. The exact amount of footage before and after the trigger depends on clip length, buffering and the manufacturer's software.

03

How should G-sensor sensitivity be set?

Start with the maker's default. If potholes create too many protected clips, reduce driving sensitivity one step; if genuine hard events are missed, increase it cautiously. Parking and driving sensitivity may have separate controls.

04

Why can locked files fill the memory card?

Some cameras do not overwrite protected files during normal looping. Review and back up anything important, then format the card in the camera at the interval recommended by its manufacturer.

05

Does a G-sensor work in parking mode?

It can trigger impact recording while parked only when the dash cam remains powered in a supported parking mode. A compatible hardwire kit or battery solution may be required.

06

What a G-sensor cannot tell you

The sensor records forces measured by the device; it does not determine who caused an incident, measure vehicle damage or guarantee that the lens captured a useful view.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

What is a G-sensor in a dash cam?

It is an accelerometer used to detect abrupt movement and protect the associated video clip from routine overwriting.

Should dash cam G-sensor sensitivity be high or low?

Use the lowest setting that reliably protects meaningful events in your vehicle. Very high sensitivity can create many false triggers on rough roads.

Does a G-sensor make a dash cam record when parked?

Only when the camera has power and supports impact-triggered parking recording. The sensor alone cannot power the camera.

Can I delete G-sensor locked files?

Yes, after preserving any evidence you need. Follow the camera's file-management or in-camera formatting instructions.

Can a G-sensor prove who was at fault?

No. It may show timing and force direction, but fault depends on the full evidence and applicable law.
