Calibrated Food Thermometers: Accuracy and Adjustment

A calibration certificate documents performance at stated points; an adjustment function lets you correct supported models. Neither removes the need for periodic checks.

A calibrated food thermometer should have more than fine-looking decimal digits. Look for a stated accuracy over the temperatures you use, traceability information when required, and a documented check or adjustment procedure.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

What does calibrated mean on a food thermometer?

It means the instrument's readings were compared with a reference under specified conditions. The certificate or documentation should identify the result and traceability where applicable.

Can every food thermometer be adjusted?

No. Some dial stems have a calibration nut and some digital models provide trim controls; sealed or fixed models may only be checked and replaced if out of tolerance.

How do I perform an ice-point check?

Prepare a dense mixture of ice and water, keep the sensing area away from the container, allow the reading to stabilize and follow the maker's procedure.

Is display resolution the same as accuracy?

No. Resolution is the smallest displayed increment; accuracy describes closeness to the reference within stated conditions.
