Turkey Meat Thermometer Placement for Reliable Readings

Place the probe in the thickest breast meat or innermost thigh without touching bone. Before serving, verify multiple areas with a clean instant-read thermometer.

Correct turkey meat thermometer placement means measuring dense meat, not the cavity, stuffing or bone. For the breast, insert from the side into the thickest portion and stop before the tip reaches the breastbone. For the thigh, target the innermost thick area where it meets the body without touching the joint.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

Where is the best meat thermometer placement in a turkey?

Check the thickest breast and the innermost thigh, keeping the sensing tip away from bone. The coldest valid reading determines whether more cooking is needed.

Can the thermometer touch turkey bone?

No. Bone can conduct heat differently from surrounding meat and distort the reading, so withdraw and reposition the tip in flesh.

Should I put the thermometer in the turkey before cooking?

A leave-in oven-safe probe can go in before cooking. Instant-read models are inserted only when checking and then removed.

Where do I check stuffing temperature?

Measure the centre of the stuffing separately from the meat. Health Canada lists 74°C for stuffing cooked alone or in poultry.
