Built In Radar Detector Systems: How to Choose the Right Type

Choose by actual sensing hardware and installation type. A GPS camera database is not the same as radar detection.

A built in radar detector search can mix a portable detector with GPS, a remote detector fitted into a vehicle, and navigation systems that show reported camera locations. Read the product page and manual. A BMW or other integrated setup must be verified by vehicle model and year. Physical detectors are permitted in British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan (with commercial-vehicle restrictions in Saskatchewan), and prohibited in Ontario, Quebec, Manitoba, Nova Scotia, the territories and the remaining provinces.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

Can a GPS unit have a built-in radar detector?

A GPS unit may provide camera alerts, but GPS alone does not detect radar. Look for receiver specifications.

What is the difference between built-in and remote detection?

Remote systems typically separate sensing hardware from a discreet display. Check the maker system diagram.

Are built-in detectors legal across Canada?

No. They are prohibited in Ontario, Quebec, Manitoba, Nova Scotia, territories and other provinces; permitted in BC, Alberta and Saskatchewan subject to restrictions.

Can I install a detector in a BMW myself?

Vehicle electronics and sensor placement vary. Follow maker instructions and consult a qualified installer.
