Guide

Is It Illegal to Have a Radar Detector in Canada?

It depends on the province. Ontario, Manitoba and Quebec restrict radar detectors in vehicles; check the law where you will drive, including during a short visit.

Is It Illegal to Have a Radar Detector in Canada?
01

Is it illegal to have a radar detector in Canada?

There is no single yes-or-no answer for every province. Ontario’s Highway Traffic Act bars a vehicle from being equipped with, carrying or containing a speed measuring warning device; Manitoba prohibits both driving with one and possessing one in a vehicle; Quebec’s Highway Safety Code restricts radar warning devices in road vehicles.

02

Which provinces restrict carrying a detector?

Ontario, Manitoba and Quebec have explicit restrictions in the legislation cited here. Do not infer that a rule in one province applies identically across Canada; check the current statutes and provincial transport guidance for every jurisdiction on your route.

03

Does an unplugged detector count?

The wording is not identical across provinces. Ontario’s provision includes a vehicle that carries or contains the device, and Manitoba separately addresses possession inside a motor vehicle. Removing power alone may therefore not address the statutory language; consult the applicable law.

04

Can an officer seize a radar detector?

Some provincial laws give officers authority to search for or seize a device in specified circumstances. Ontario’s section 79 describes stop, entry, search and seizure powers where an officer has reasonable grounds; Manitoba law also provides for seizure. Read the current statute rather than relying on a retailer’s summary.

05

What if I am driving across provinces?

Plan around the strictest rules on your itinerary. Before crossing a provincial boundary, remove the unit from the vehicle if the destination prohibits carrying it, and confirm the current law with that province’s official legislation or transport authority.

Yes. Manitoba’s Highway Traffic Act prohibits equipping or driving a vehicle with a radar detection device and possessing one in a motor vehicle.

Is it illegal to have a radar detector in Quebec?

Quebec’s Highway Safety Code restricts radar warning devices in road vehicles and prohibits driving a vehicle containing one. Check the current Code for the exact provisions.
