Is a Radar Detector Illegal in Canada? Where It Is Banned
01

Is a radar detector illegal in Canada?

There is no single nationwide rule for ordinary use; provinces and territories set restrictions. In practice, detectors are permitted only in British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan for non-commercial vehicles, and Saskatchewan prohibits them in commercial vehicles.

02

Where is a radar detector illegal?

Detector use is prohibited in Ontario, Quebec, Manitoba, Nova Scotia, the territories and all other provinces outside BC, Alberta and Saskatchewan. Do not install, carry or use a device in a prohibited jurisdiction.

03

What does Saskatchewan restrict?

Saskatchewan’s traffic rules prohibit driving a commercial vehicle equipped with, containing or carrying a radar warning device, and prohibit permitting a commercial vehicle to remain equipped with one. Private vehicles are treated differently.

04

Can I travel across provincial borders with one?

A device may be legal at the start of a trip and prohibited later on the route. Check every province and territory you will enter and remove the device before entering a jurisdiction where it is banned.

05

Are radar detector apps treated the same way?

Apps that report locations or community alerts are not the same hardware as a radio-frequency detector, but their use may have separate local rules. Check the current rules for both the app feature and your location.
