Is a Radar Detector Legal in Canada? Provincial Rules Explained

There is no single yes-or-no answer for every Canadian road: legality depends on the province and, in Saskatchewan, vehicle class.

Is a Radar Detector Legal in Canada? Provincial Rules Explained
01

Which provinces permit radar detectors?

British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan permit them. Saskatchewan excludes commercial vehicles. Ontario, Quebec, Manitoba, Nova Scotia, the territories and the remaining provinces prohibit detectors.

02

Check each province on your route

A detector permitted at the start of a journey may be prohibited after a border crossing. Review every province and territory on your route before carrying or transporting a device.

03

Read the rule for the exact device

Statutes may define prohibited equipment by its purpose, including warning a driver about speed-measuring equipment. Do not assume a different product name or a stealth feature avoids a restriction.

04

Treat GPS features separately

GPS camera databases and radar receivers use different mechanisms. Legal treatment can depend on the actual device and jurisdiction, so check official rules rather than assuming all warning features are equivalent.
