Ontario Radar Detector Fine: What the Law Says About Carrying a Detector

Ontario’s Highway Traffic Act prohibits a vehicle from carrying or containing a speed measuring warning device. The statute sets a fine range and describes seizure powers; verify its current text before acting.

An Ontario radar detector fine follows from section 79 of the Highway Traffic Act: a person must not drive on a highway a motor vehicle equipped with, carrying or containing a speed measuring warning device. The same section defines the device broadly to include equipment intended to warn a driver of nearby speed-measuring equipment or interfere with it.

Questions before you buy

What is the fine for a radar detector in Ontario?

Section 79(5) of Ontario's Highway Traffic Act makes a person convicted under subsection 79(2) liable to a fine within the range set out in the statute. Check the current text for the applicable amount and any amendments.

Can police seize a radar detector in Ontario?

Section 79(3) permits an officer with reasonable grounds to stop, enter and search a vehicle and seize a device found there. The statute also addresses forfeiture following conviction.

Is a radar detector illegal in Nova Scotia too?

Nova Scotia’s Motor Vehicle Act separately addresses radar-warning devices. Its rules and consequences should be checked in that province’s current legislation, rather than inferred from Ontario’s fine provision.

Does Ontario ban radar jammers as well as detectors?

Section 79 defines a speed measuring warning device to include equipment designed or intended to interfere with speed-measuring equipment. Whether a particular device falls within that definition depends on its function and the law’s application.
