Undetectable Radar Detectors: Meaning, Limits and Canadian Rules

“Undetectable” usually refers to reduced visibility to radar detector detectors (RDDs), not invisibility in every situation. Canadian legality depends on the province.

An undetectable radar detector is designed to reduce the chance that a radar detector detector will identify its emissions. That wording is a manufacturer claim, not a guarantee. The first decision for Canadian drivers is legal: radar detectors are permitted only in British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan, and not in commercial vehicles in Saskatchewan. They are prohibited in Ontario, Quebec, Manitoba, Nova Scotia, the territories and the other provinces.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

Which radar detector is undetectable?

No detector can responsibly be described as guaranteed undetectable in every condition. Some manufacturers advertise reduced RDD visibility; check the exact model claim and remember that it does not change provincial restrictions.

Are undetectable radar detectors legal in Canada?

They are permitted only in British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan, except in commercial vehicles in Saskatchewan. They are prohibited elsewhere in Canada.

What does RDD mean?

RDD means radar detector detector: equipment used to identify emissions from some radar detectors. Detection behaviour depends on the equipment and circumstances.

Does stealth mean a detector cannot be found?

No. “Stealth” is a product claim about reduced detectability, not proof of universal invisibility or permission to use the device.
