WiFi Coverage Extenders: Better Reach for Canadian Homes

A WiFi coverage extender can relay a router’s signal into a nearby weak area. The right choice depends on where the signal fades, your router and whether you need one room or whole-home roaming.

A WiFi coverage extender is useful when your router works well in one part of the home but its signal weakens before reaching another. Place a compatible repeater where the existing signal is still usable; putting it inside the dead zone leaves little signal to relay. For a single room, a plug-in range extender may be enough. A large or multi-floor home can benefit more from a coordinated mesh system, while powerline WiFi can help where thick walls interrupt wireless backhaul. Common questions

Questions before you buy

Where should I place a WiFi coverage extender?

Place it between the router and the weak area, where it can still receive a stable signal. Use its signal indicator or setup app, then test the room you want to cover.

Will an extender improve coverage through concrete walls?

It may help if placed before the signal becomes very weak, but dense materials can also obstruct the link between extender and router. A wired access point or mesh node with Ethernet backhaul may suit that layout better.

Does a WiFi extender increase internet speed?

It can improve the connection available in a previously weak spot, but it cannot exceed the internet service or router connection feeding it. Wireless relaying can also reduce throughput compared with a direct router connection.

Should I choose an extender or mesh for coverage?

A basic extender suits a limited dead zone and existing router. Mesh is designed for coordinated coverage across multiple nodes; check compatibility and whether the system replaces or works with your current router.
