Does a WiFi Extender Increase Your Internet Speed?
A WiFi extender can improve speed in a weak-signal area, but it does not increase the speed supplied by your internet plan. Its placement and connection to the router matter.

01
Does a WiFi extender improve speed?
It may improve the connection speed your device actually gets when distance or walls have weakened the router signal. The extender repeats the existing network; it does not raise your internet plan’s maximum speed or repair a slow broadband line.
02
Why can an extender feel slower?
A wireless extender has to communicate with the router as well as your device. If that backhaul link is weak, or the model shares radio capacity between links, throughput can fall. The advertised combined WiFi rate is a theoretical link rate, not a guaranteed download result.
03
How to increase WiFi extender speed
Place the extender where it still receives a reliable router signal, roughly between the router and the dead zone. Use its signal indicator or management app, keep it in the open, and test more than one outlet. Avoid placing it inside the area where the original signal is already unusable.
04
Check the source of slow downloads
Run a speed test near the router and then in the problem room under similar conditions. If both results are poor, check the modem, router, service plan and household congestion first. A WiFi speed booster cannot fix an overloaded connection or a device limitation.
05
When a wired access point may suit better
If you can run Ethernet to the weak area, an access point can avoid the wireless relay link. For a larger home or seamless movement between rooms, compare a mesh system with a conventional range extender before buying.
Common questions
Questions before you buy
Does wifi extender improve speed?
It can improve usable WiFi speed where the router signal is weak, provided the extender itself has a strong link to the router. It cannot make your internet service faster than its plan or line allows.
How do I increase WiFi extender speed?
Move it closer to the router until its connection indicator shows a good link, then test from the target room. Keep it clear of cabinets and interference, and update its firmware using the manufacturer’s instructions.
Do WiFi boosters increase internet speed?
A booster can improve coverage and speed at a distant device, but it does not increase the internet connection coming into the home. Results depend on signal quality, placement, device capability and network load.
Can a WiFi speed booster make downloads faster for free?
The extender itself does not change your broadband plan. A free placement change or wired connection may improve local WiFi performance, while the internet service’s capacity remains the limit.
The TP-Link RE705X is a strong feature-led starting point, with WiFi 6, AX3000 class and a Gigabit port. Consider NETGEAR EAX15 for mesh-style WiFi 6 or simpler plug-in models for a basic dead zone.
TP-Link’s Canadian range includes WiFi 7, WiFi 6 and older dual-band extenders. Match the model to your router, desired features and available placement.
A WiFi extender can carry an existing router’s signal into a weak-coverage area. Start with compatibility and placement, then compare a standalone repeater with a provider mesh system.
