Dashcam 1080p Full HD Buying Guide

Full HD remains practical for everyday recording when paired with good exposure control, a useful field of view and reliable storage.

A dashcam 1080p Full HD records at a nominal resolution of 1920 by 1080 pixels. That can be enough for documenting road position, signals and nearby vehicles, especially in daylight. Resolution alone does not guarantee readable plates: sensor quality, bitrate, shutter behaviour, windshield condition and relative speed all affect detail.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

Is 1080p Full HD good enough for a dash cam?

It can be sufficient for general incident context and nearby detail. Higher resolution may help in favourable conditions, but sensor and exposure performance remain important.

Can a 1080p dash cam read licence plates at night?

Sometimes, but no resolution guarantees it. Motion, glare, distance, dirty glass and low light can prevent a clear capture.

Does Full HD use less storage than 4K?

Typically yes at comparable compression settings, though actual file size depends on bitrate, frame rate, codec and number of channels.

What frame rate should a 1080p car camera use?

Thirty frames per second is common, while some models offer sixty for smoother motion. Check whether the higher setting changes HDR, bitrate or other features.
