Guide

Where to Put a Dash Cam in Your Car

Mount it high on the windscreen, normally behind or just beside the rear-view mirror, where the lens has a clear view and the unit does not obstruct the driver. Check your province's rules and the camera manual before fixing it permanently.

Where to Put a Dash Cam in Your Car
01

Where to put a dashcam on the windscreen

Choose a spot in the upper central area, behind the rear-view mirror if the camera and vehicle allow it. Sit in your normal driving position first: the housing, cable and mount must not intrude into the road view, and the lens must remain inside the swept area of the wipers.

02

Frame the road, not the dashboard

Switch on live view and level the horizon. Include enough bonnet to give context, but favour the road ahead; excessive sky can make the roadway appear dark. Keep the lens clear of the mirror's dotted ceramic area unless the mount maker permits it.

03

Account for cameras and sensors

Modern vehicles may place rain sensors, driver-assistance cameras and antenna elements around the mirror. Do not cover them or route a cable across their field of view. Your owner's manual identifies restricted windscreen zones.

04

Position a rear camera

Place a rear module high and near the centre of the rear glass, within the wiper-cleared area where possible. Confirm that heated-window lines, a spoiler and the cable connector do not spoil the image or prevent the hatch from opening.

05

Test before bonding the mount

Clean and dry the glass, then hold the powered camera in place and save a short clip. Check the view in daylight, verify that the mirror still adjusts, and only then apply the adhesive pad using the maker's temperature and curing instructions.

06

Keep controls accessible

A discreet installation should still let you remove the memory card, press an emergency-save button and detach the camera without straining the cable. Never adjust the unit while driving.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

Where should I put a dashcam on the windscreen?

Usually high and close to the centre, behind or beside the rear-view mirror. It must preserve the driver's view and give the lens an unobstructed, wiper-cleared outlook.

Can a dash cam go on the passenger side?

Yes, if the lens still captures a balanced road view and the installation complies with local rules. Check live view because a far-side position can create an off-centre perspective.

Should a dash cam be visible from the driver's seat?

The screen need not be visible while driving. A position hidden behind the mirror is often less distracting, provided buttons and the memory card remain safely accessible when parked.

Does the rear dash cam go inside or outside?

Most consumer rear modules mount inside the rear window. Use an exterior position only when the manufacturer specifies weather resistance and the required installation method.
