Hard Drive Dash Cams and External SSD Recording

Most consumer dash cams record to microSD, not a hard drive. VIOFO's A329 family is a notable exception with documented external SSD support.

A hard drive dash cam is appealing when you want a longer recording history, but the phrase can be misleading. Nearly all personal dash cams use removable microSD cards; only specific models are designed to write to an external solid-state drive. VIOFO identifies the A329 series as SSD-compatible when used with the correct data connection.

Questions before you buy

Can a dash cam record to an external hard drive?

Only if the manufacturer explicitly supports it. The VIOFO A329 series documents external SSD recording; a USB port alone does not prove drive compatibility.

Is an SSD better than a microSD card for a dash cam?

An SSD can offer more capacity, but it adds a cable and another device to secure. A supported endurance microSD card is usually the cleaner choice for normal daily recording.

How does loop recording work with a large drive?

The camera still divides footage into clips and overwrites eligible older files when storage fills. Locked event files can reduce the space available for the normal loop.

Can an external drive be left loose in the car?

It should be secured away from pedals, airbags, heat and moving trim. A loose drive or strained cable can interrupt recording and become a hazard.
