Meat Thermometers for Burgers and Thin Patties

For burgers, a fast digital probe with a narrow tip is easier to place in the centre from the side. Check every patty rather than relying on colour.

A meat thermometer for burgers needs to reach the centre of a thin patty without reading the hotter exterior. Health Canada says to insert the food thermometer through the side, all the way to the middle, and to check each piece separately.

Questions before you buy

Where should a meat thermometer go in a burger?

Insert it through the side until the sensing area reaches the centre of the patty. This avoids measuring only the hot outer surface.

What temperature should beef burgers reach in Canada?

Health Canada lists 71°C for ground beef, veal, lamb and pork. Ground poultry burgers are listed at 74°C.

Can you check a burger from the top?

A very thin-tip probe may work, but side insertion makes it easier to keep the sensing area centred in a thin patty.

Do all burgers on the grill need checking?

Check each patty because thickness and grill heat can vary. Clean the probe between contact with raw or partly cooked food and cooked food.
