IR Thermometers for Cooking Surfaces and Equipment

An infrared thermometer reads surface temperature without contact. It is useful for pans, griddles and ovens, but cannot confirm the safe internal temperature of meat.

An IR thermometer for cooking measures infrared energy from a surface. Aim it at a griddle, pizza stone, pan or oven wall to identify hot and cool areas without contact. It does not see through food, so it cannot tell you whether the centre of meat has reached a safe temperature.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

Can an infrared thermometer check meat temperature?

It measures only the surface. Use a probe thermometer in the thickest central meat to confirm safe internal temperature.

What does distance-to-spot ratio mean?

It describes how large an area the thermometer averages at a given distance. Move closer when you need to isolate a small cooking surface.

Why are IR readings unreliable on shiny pans?

Reflective metal has low emissivity and can reflect surrounding infrared energy. Follow the instrument instructions or use a suitable contact probe.

Is the laser measuring the temperature?

No. The laser is an aiming guide; the infrared sensor averages a broader spot whose size depends on distance and the instrument's optics.
