IR Meat Thermometers for Cooking

Infrared thermometers read surfaces without contact. For food safety inside meat, pair one with a clean penetration probe.

An IR meat thermometer detects infrared energy from the surface it is aimed at. That makes it useful for checking a griddle, pizza stone, oil or chilled-food surface without touching it, but it does not reveal the temperature at the centre of a roast.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

Can an IR thermometer check whether meat is cooked?

It can check only the surface. Use a clean food probe in the thickest part to assess internal temperature.

What does distance-to-spot ratio mean?

It describes how wide an area the instrument measures at a given distance. A larger ratio lets you measure a smaller target from farther away.

Why does shiny cookware give odd infrared readings?

Reflective surfaces emit and reflect infrared energy differently from matt food surfaces. Follow the instrument guidance on emissivity and target selection.

Is a laser the part that measures temperature?

No. The laser is an aiming aid; the infrared sensor measures radiation from an area around the aim point.
