Radar Detector Apps for iPhone: What They Can and Cannot Do

An iPhone app cannot detect radar by itself. Some apps share reported hazards or pair with compatible hardware; those functions are different.

A radar detector app for iPhone can mean a community-reporting navigation app, or a companion app for a physical detector. An iPhone has no radar receiver for police signals, so an app cannot replace hardware. Review location permissions, battery use and alert coverage, then set a route before moving. Physical detectors are permitted in British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan (not commercial vehicles in Saskatchewan), and prohibited in Ontario, Quebec, Manitoba, Nova Scotia, the territories and other provinces.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

Can an iPhone detect police radar?

No. An iPhone app cannot receive police radar signals. It can show user reports or connect to compatible hardware.

What does a radar detector companion app do?

Depending on model, it may configure settings, show alerts or share reports. Check maker compatibility and app privacy details.

Are speed-camera alerts the same as radar detection?

No. A database or user report identifies a mapped location; a detector senses radio-frequency emissions when present.

Can I use a radar detector app in Ontario?

Apps differ from physical detectors. Ontario prohibits driving with a vehicle equipped with a radar detector; follow the Highway Traffic Act.
