How Far Will a WiFi Extender Reach in Your Home?
A WiFi extender does not have one dependable distance for every home. Its useful reach depends on the signal it receives, the obstacles in between and the device connecting to it.

01
Why there is no single reach figure
A manufacturer's coverage figure is measured under particular conditions. Interior walls, floors, metal objects, neighbouring networks and the client antenna all change what works in a real house. Treat a stated distance as a comparison point, not a promise.
02
Will a signal booster improve WiFi?
It can extend coverage into an area where the router signal is weak but still usable. A booster repeats what it receives, so it will not repair a poor broadband connection or create a strong link from a location with no signal.
03
Choose a placement with a usable source signal
Start around the midpoint between the router and the problem room, then adjust using the extender's signal indicator or app. Keep it in an open location and away from large appliances and dense obstructions.
04
Will a WiFi booster help with buffering?
It may help when buffering comes from weak WiFi between the device and router. If the broadband line, streaming service or home network is congested, moving or replacing the extender may not solve the cause.
05
Will a WiFi booster help streaming?
A stronger local connection can make streaming more consistent when the original room has poor coverage. Test playback in the same room and at the same time of day, and compare with a wired connection if possible.
06
Check the result where you use WiFi
After placement, test the room with the same phone, laptop or TV you normally use there. Walk between rooms and watch for hand-off behaviour; some extenders use a separate network name, so devices may need to reconnect manually.
Common questions
Questions before you buy
How far will a WiFi extender reach through walls?
Walls reduce signal differently depending on material and thickness, so no universal wall count or distance applies. Place the extender before the signal becomes very weak and check coverage in the target room.
Does an extender's advertised range mean that speed stays the same?
No. Range describes possible coverage under specified conditions, not full-speed service everywhere. Wireless relaying, interference and the source link affect throughput.
Can I put a WiFi extender outside to reach a shed?
Use only an outdoor-rated access point or extender for exposed locations. An indoor plug-in unit should remain indoors; a wired outdoor access point can be more suitable for a detached building.
Should the extender be closer to the router or the dead zone?
It must stay close enough to receive a useful router signal while being nearer to the area that needs coverage. Moving it into the dead zone usually leaves it with too little signal to repeat.
A WiFi extender can carry an existing router’s signal into a weak-coverage area. Start with compatibility and placement, then compare a standalone repeater with a provider mesh system.
The TP-Link RE705X is a strong feature-led starting point, with WiFi 6, AX3000 class and a Gigabit port. Consider NETGEAR EAX15 for mesh-style WiFi 6 or simpler plug-in models for a basic dead zone.
TP-Link’s Canadian range includes WiFi 7, WiFi 6 and older dual-band extenders. Match the model to your router, desired features and available placement.
NETGEAR’s Canadian range includes WiFi 6 mesh extenders and older AC models. Check each model’s port, generation and setup method before choosing.
