How to Use a Router as a WiFi Extender: Setup Options

A spare router may extend coverage if it supports a repeater or wireless bridge mode. If not, connect it by Ethernet and configure access point mode when available.

How to Use a Router as a WiFi Extender: Setup Options
01

Check whether the router supports repeater mode

Look in the manual or admin interface for wireless repeater, bridge, WDS or range-extender mode. Similar names can mean different things, and support varies by firmware and router pair.

02

Choose wireless repeater or wired access point

A wireless repeater receives and rebroadcasts the router network, so placement and compatibility matter. A wired access point uses Ethernet backhaul and is often more stable when you can run a cable.

03

Use firmware for the exact revision

Check the model label and use firmware intended for that hardware revision. Follow the router manual for updates and resets; do not install firmware for a similar-looking model.

04

Configure the secondary router

Set the supported operating mode, choose the upstream network for a wireless bridge, and configure network name and security as the guide directs. Avoid conflicting DHCP or LAN settings.

05

Place and verify the connection

For wireless bridging, keep the secondary router within good signal range of the main router and nearer the weak area. Test internet access, roaming and wired ports in the target room.

06

Use a dedicated extender if modes are missing

If the spare router has no supported repeater or bridge mode, a dedicated extender or Ethernet-fed access point may be easier to configure and maintain.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

Can any router be used as a WiFi extender?

No. The spare router must support a compatible repeater, bridge or access point mode. Check the model and firmware documentation before attempting setup.

Is router bridge mode the same as repeater mode?

Not always. Bridge can refer to several network behaviours, including a wireless client connection or transparent link. Follow the router documentation to identify what its mode does.

Can I use an old router as a WiFi extender with Ethernet?

If the router supports access point mode, connect it to the main router by Ethernet and configure it as the manual specifies. This wired backhaul avoids relying on a wireless relay link.

Will using a router as an extender keep the same WiFi name?

Some configurations allow the same network name and security, but roaming depends on client and router behaviour. Follow the vendor guide and test movement between coverage areas.
