Dash Cam Install Tools for a Clean, Safe Setup

For a basic cable-powered setup, start with a non-marring trim tool and cable clips. Hardwiring usually adds a circuit tester, the correct fuse tap and a suitable crimping tool.

The right dash cam install tools help you route cables neatly, avoid marked interior panels and make sound electrical connections. For a plug-in front camera, a nylon trim-removal tool, cable clips, cleaning cloth and flashlight may be enough. A rear camera can also call for a fish tape or pull cord to guide the cable through longer trim runs.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

What tools do I need to install a dash cam?

A typical plug-in installation needs a non-marring trim tool, cable clips, a cleaning cloth and a flashlight. Add a circuit tester or multimeter, the correct fuse tap, suitable fuses and a crimping tool if you are hardwiring.

Do I need a trim removal tool for a dash cam?

It is strongly recommended for hiding cable along the headliner and pillar trim. A plastic, non-marring tool is less likely to scratch surfaces than a metal screwdriver, but wiring must still stay clear of curtain airbags.

Do I need a multimeter to hardwire a dash cam?

You need a reliable way to distinguish constant-power and accessory-switched circuits; a multimeter or suitable automotive circuit tester can do that. Never choose a fuse position by guesswork, and follow the vehicle and hardwire-kit instructions.

Which fuse tap fits my car?

It depends on the fuse style used in your vehicle, such as Micro2, mini, low-profile mini or ATO. Inspect the fuse panel and consult the vehicle manual before selecting a tap; similar-looking formats are not interchangeable.

Can I route a dash cam cable behind an airbag?

Do not place a cable where it could cross or obstruct an airbag's deployment path. Follow the vehicle maker's trim and airbag guidance, or have a qualified installer route the cable if the safe path is unclear.
