Motion Detection Dash Cams for Parked Cars

A motion detection dash cam can save clips when movement enters its field of view, but it needs a supported parking mode and dependable power. Impact sensing solves a different problem.

A motion detection dash cam watches for movement while the vehicle is parked and records according to its parking-mode design. This differs from a G-sensor, which reacts to physical impact, and from time-lapse recording, which captures continuously at a reduced frame rate.

Questions before you buy

How does motion detection work on a dash cam?

The camera analyses changes in its image and saves a clip when movement meets its detection rules. Exact trigger timing and clip length depend on the model.

Will motion detection work when the car is off?

Only if parking mode remains powered through a supported hardwire kit, battery pack or always-on outlet. Standard switched outlets turn off with the vehicle.

Is motion detection the same as impact detection?

No. Motion detection responds to visible movement; impact detection uses a G-sensor to react to a bump or collision.

Can motion detection drain the car battery?

Any parking camera draws power. Use manufacturer-supported low-voltage protection or a compatible dash-cam battery pack and follow installation guidance.
