Motion Detection Dash Cams for Parking Protection

Motion detection can reduce unnecessary parked footage, but buffered recording and dependable power determine whether useful moments are saved.

A motion detection dash cam watches for activity when the vehicle is parked, but products do not all respond in the same way. Some analyse movement in the image; others rely on an impact sensor; more advanced parking modes may use both. Check whether recording is buffered so the saved clip can include moments before the trigger.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

How does dash cam motion detection work?

The camera monitors changes in the scene and starts or marks a recording when its threshold is met. Exact behaviour, including any pre-event buffer, varies by model.

Does motion detection work when the car is off?

Only if the camera remains powered in a supported parking mode. A normal accessory socket may switch off with the ignition.

Will trees or pedestrians trigger parking recording?

They can. Scene-based detection responds to visible movement, so position and sensitivity settings influence false triggers.

Is impact detection the same as motion detection?

No. Impact detection uses a force sensor, while visual motion detection reacts to change in the camera view; some dash cams combine them.
