Check what can get wet
Read the model instructions before cleaning. A waterproof probe may tolerate more than a splash-resistant display, while a cabled connector is often the most vulnerable part.

Guide
Wash the food-contact stem or probe with warm, soapy water before each use and between readings. Do not immerse the display or connector unless the model is explicitly waterproof.

Read the model instructions before cleaning. A waterproof probe may tolerate more than a splash-resistant display, while a cabled connector is often the most vulnerable part.
After the probe is cool, wash the food-contact metal with warm water and dish soap. Use a clean cloth or soft sponge rather than an abrasive pad that could damage markings or seals.
Health Canada advises cleaning a digital food thermometer in warm, soapy water before use. Repeat the wash between readings when a probe has touched food that is not yet safely cooked.
Wipe the body with a damp cloth if the manual permits. Do not soak buttons, battery compartments, charging contacts or probe sockets unless the manufacturer explicitly describes them as immersible.
Remove soap residue from the metal, then dry the thermometer fully. Look for a kinked cable, cracked seal, corroded contact or loose probe before the next use.
Coil cables loosely and use the supplied case or holder. A tight bend beside the connector can shorten cable life, while an uncovered sharp tip is a puncture hazard.
Common questions
Wash the food-contact stem in warm, soapy water before taking another reading. Keep contaminated hands and utensils away from cooked food.
Only if the instructions for that exact model say it is dishwasher-safe. A washable probe does not automatically make its charger or display dishwasher-safe.
Follow the manufacturer's approved cleaning method. Warm, soapy water is the baseline stated by Health Canada for digital food thermometers.
Clean it before each use and between readings whenever it has contacted food that is not yet safely cooked. Clean it again before storage if residue remains.
