Leave-In Meat Thermometers for Ovens and Smokers

A wired alarm probe is the easiest way to watch a roast without opening the door. A dial model is simpler, but usually lacks a target-temperature alert.

A leave-in meat thermometer tracks the centre of a roast throughout cooking. Digital versions usually run a heat-rated cable from the probe to a display outside the oven; traditional dial models remain inside and are read through the door or when it opens.

Best Leave-In Meat Thermometers for Ovens and Smokers

ChefAlarm is our best all-round wired leave-in model because it combines a timer with high and low alerts. DOT is easier for one roast; Signals scales to multi-probe barbecue; MEATER Pro Duo removes probe cables for two foods.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

Can you leave a meat thermometer in the oven?

Only an oven-safe leave-in probe or dial can remain during cooking. Keep any external display outside and route the cable as the manufacturer directs.

Where should a leave-in thermometer go in a roast?

Put the sensing area in the thickest central portion, avoiding bone and large fat pockets. Recheck another spot before serving when the roast is irregular.

Is a wired leave-in thermometer safe for a closed oven door?

It is when the cable and routing are approved by the manufacturer. Do not use a damaged cable or exceed its published heat limit.

Do I still need an instant-read thermometer?

It is useful for confirming the leave-in reading in a second location and for checking smaller pieces. Clean it between readings to prevent cross-contamination.
