Meat Thermometers You Can Leave in the Oven

Use a purpose-built leave-in probe or oven-safe dial thermometer. An ordinary instant-read thermometer should only stay in the oven if its manufacturer explicitly permits it.

A meat thermometer you can leave in the oven monitors the food throughout the cook. The most flexible design uses a heat-rated metal probe in the meat, a cable through the door and a display kept outside; a wireless in-food probe is another option when its stated ambient limit suits the oven.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

Can you leave a meat thermometer in the grill?

Only if the probe, cable and any in-grill components are rated for the grill's heat. Keep the display or transmitter outside unless its instructions expressly allow otherwise.

Do you leave a meat thermometer in a roast while cooking?

A leave-in model is designed for this; an instant-read model usually is not. Insert the sensing tip into the centre of the thickest section and avoid bone.

Do you leave the meat thermometer in while cooking turkey?

You may leave a purpose-built oven-safe probe in place. Verify the final temperature in more than one thick area because a whole bird can cook unevenly.

Do you leave a thermometer in turkey when cooking?

Yes, if it is specifically rated as a leave-in thermometer. Otherwise, remove the turkey briefly and check with a clean instant-read digital thermometer near the end of cooking.
