Choosing an Air Freshener for an Evaporative Cooler

Fragrance products may mask odors, but cleaning the tank, media and airflow path addresses common sources. Check your cooler manual before adding anything to its water.

An evaporative cooler air freshener is usually intended to add scent or reduce perceived stale smells; it does not replace cleaning. Odors can come from standing water, dusty or damp cooling media, or a dirty reservoir. Before buying a fragrance additive, check whether the cooler maker permits it: unapproved oils or chemicals may damage components, leave residue or interfere with water circulation. This page explains odor control and points to the maintenance and instructions guides for model-specific care.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

Can I put air freshener in an evaporative cooler?

Only use an additive if the cooler manufacturer explicitly approves it for your model. Household fragrance oils and cleaners may leave deposits or damage the pump and media.

How do I get rid of a musty cooler smell?

Unplug the unit, drain and clean the reservoir, and inspect the media as directed in its manual. Dry components before storage and replace media if the manufacturer says it is no longer serviceable.

Do evaporative cooler scent pads cool the air?

Scent pads add fragrance; they do not provide the evaporative cooling function. Cooling comes from water evaporating across the wet media as air passes through it.

Can essential oils go in cooler water?

Do not add essential oils unless the manual specifically allows them. Oils can leave residue and may affect plastic, seals, pump operation or the media.
