Radar Detectors for Cars: Types, Features and Buying Guides

A radar detector can alert you to certain active radar signals, but capabilities and local rules vary. Start with the detector type, mounting and features you will actually use.

A radar detector for a car is a receiver that can alert a driver to certain radar signals; it is not a guarantee of advance warning, and it does not make speeding safe or lawful. Choose by the environment you drive in, the alert types you need, and how you want to mount and power the unit.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

What does a radar detector detect?

It receives supported radar bands and, on some models, laser signals. Detection depends on the device, signal, terrain and circumstances; it does not identify every enforcement method.

Is a radar detector the same as a police radar detector?

The terms usually refer to a consumer receiver that alerts to certain police radar signals. A detector is not a police scanner and does not provide immunity from enforcement.

Can a radar detector detect a speed camera?

Some models include GPS camera databases or app-connected alerts, which are separate from detecting a radar transmission. Coverage and database updates depend on the model and region.

Where should a car radar detector be mounted?

Follow the product manual and local vehicle rules. A windshield mount should not obstruct the driver’s view, and the detector’s sensors need an unobstructed field of view.
