720p Dashcams: Are They Still Good Enough in 2026?

A 720p model may capture the broad sequence of an incident in daylight. It is a weak choice when small plate detail, night footage or cropping matters.

A 720p dashcam records at 1280 by 720 pixels, enough to show lane position, traffic-light state and the general path of nearby vehicles under favorable conditions. Its limited pixel count leaves less room to identify fine detail or crop a distant subject.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

Is 720p clear enough for a dashcam?

It can document broad road context in good light, but it may not preserve small or distant details. Higher native resolution gives you more pixels to work with.

Can a 720p dashcam read license plates?

Sometimes at close range and low relative speed, but there is no guarantee. Light, motion blur, focus and compression can obscure a plate at any resolution.

Does 720p use less storage than 1080p?

Usually, if codec, frame rate and bitrate settings are comparable. Actual file size depends on how the manufacturer encodes the video.

Should I replace a working 720p camera?

Replace it if footage lacks the detail or night clarity you need, or if recording is unreliable. A dependable lower-resolution camera still provides more context than no recording.
