Car Camera Exterior Systems for Front, Rear and Side Views

Use only cameras explicitly rated for exterior mounting. A weather-resistant housing, sealed connector and protected cable route are essential; an ordinary rear dashcam is not automatically suitable.

A car camera exterior installation can see around a truck, trailer or vehicle body where glass-mounted cameras cannot. It also faces rain, spray, dust, vibration and wider temperature swings, so housing and connector protection matter as much as resolution.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

Can a regular dashcam be mounted outside?

Not unless the manufacturer explicitly approves exterior use. Most standard dashcams are designed for the cabin and lack sealed housings and connectors.

What weather rating should an exterior car camera have?

Use a published ingress rating appropriate to road spray and dust, and read the manufacturer's mounting limits. The rating applies only when connectors and seals are installed correctly.

Is an exterior reversing camera also a dashcam?

Not necessarily. Many reversing cameras show live video but do not record. A dashcam system needs a compatible recorder and storage.

Where should exterior camera cables run?

Use protected vehicle pathways, sealed grommets and strain relief, keeping cables away from heat, sharp edges, hinges and moving suspension components.
