How to Choose a Fuse Tap for a Dashcam

A fuse tap must match the vehicle's fuse format and the dash cam kit's electrical requirements. Circuit selection, orientation, fuse sizing, and safe cable routing matter as much as physical fit.

A fuse tap for dashcam installation provides an additional fused branch from a suitable vehicle circuit. It is not a universal plug. Blade formats include several full-size, mini, low-profile, and micro designs that can look similar while fitting differently. The hardwire kit may also need separate constant and accessory-switched connections for parking mode.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

What size fuse tap does a dash cam need?

The physical size must match the vehicle's fuse slot, while the fuse values must follow the vehicle and hardwire-kit instructions. Do not choose by appearance alone.

Which fuse should I tap for a dash cam?

Use a permitted non-safety-critical circuit with the power behavior your kit requires. Vehicle designs differ, so a generic circuit name is not a substitute for the fuse map and testing.

Does fuse-tap orientation matter?

Yes. The supply and load sides affect how both circuits are protected. Follow the add-a-circuit and vehicle guidance or have an automotive electrician install it.

Can a fuse tap enable parking mode?

It can form part of a compatible hardwire installation. The camera and kit must support parking mode, and the low-voltage protection must be configured correctly.

Is an OBD cable easier than a dash cam fuse tap?

It can be more reversible, but compatibility and parking behavior vary. Use only an approved accessory and check whether it affects diagnostic-port availability.
