Dash Cam Overlays: Speed, GPS, Time, and Telemetry

An overlay can add useful context to footage, but every extra field exposes more information. Keep only the timestamp, location, speed, or branding you genuinely need.

A dash cam overlay places information such as date, time, speed, coordinates, or a device label on recorded video. Some data is burned directly into the image; other details remain in a companion file and appear only in the maker's desktop viewer.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

Can I remove the speed overlay from dash cam footage?

Many cameras let you disable speed stamping before recording. If it was burned into the image, removing it afterward may not be possible without altering the video.

Why is my dash cam timestamp wrong?

An incorrect time zone, daylight-saving setting, lost GPS fix, or reset clock can cause errors. Correct the camera settings and check a new clip.

Is GPS data always visible on the video?

No. Some cameras stamp coordinates or speed on the frame, while others store route data for compatible viewing software.

Can I add an overlay after recording?

Compatible viewer or editing software may add maps and telemetry when the original files contain matching GPS data. Ordinary video without recorded metadata cannot recreate an accurate route.
