Dashcam Power Adapters: Plugs, USB and Hardwire Options

Use the adapter specified for your camera's input and your vehicle's electrical system. A plug-in adapter is simplest for driving footage; supported parking mode usually requires a compatible hardwire kit or battery pack.

A dashcam power adapter is not interchangeable merely because the connector fits. Match the camera's required voltage, current, connector and supported power protocol to an adapter approved by the manufacturer. The wrong supply can cause restarts, corrupt recordings or damage.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

Can I power a dash cam from any USB port?

Only if the port and cable meet the camera maker's input requirements. Some factory USB ports provide too little power or switch off unpredictably.

What adapter do I need for dash cam parking mode?

Use the camera maker's compatible hardwire kit or supported battery solution. Parking mode often needs constant power, accessory sensing and low-voltage protection.

Can I leave a dash cam plugged into the accessory socket?

That depends on whether the socket remains live after shutdown. A permanently live socket can continue drawing power and may not trigger the camera's intended parking behavior.

Are OBD power cables safe for dash cams?

Use one only when the dash cam or cable manufacturer lists your application and mode. The diagnostic port has a primary service purpose, so compatibility matters.

Why does my dash cam restart while driving?

Common power-side causes include an underpowered adapter, damaged cable, loose socket or incompatible supply. Check the approved accessories before assuming the camera is faulty.
