Is a Radar Detector Illegal in Texas? A Driver’s Guide

For ordinary private passenger vehicles, Texas law targets devices that interfere with police radar or laser, rather than passive radar detectors. Federal rules prohibit radar detectors in commercial motor vehicles, so the vehicle category matters.

Is a Radar Detector Illegal in Texas? A Driver’s Guide
01

Is a radar detector illegal in Texas for a private car?

Texas Transportation Code Section 547.616 prohibits radar interference devices that disrupt, scramble or interfere with law-enforcement radar or laser speed measurement. The provision does not describe an ordinary receive-only detector; the practical distinction is detection versus interference. Check the current statute if your equipment has additional transmitting or jamming functions.

02

Radar detectors and radar jammers are different devices

A detector receives signals to alert its driver. A jammer is designed to interfere with speed-measuring equipment. Texas law expressly bars using, installing or operating a radar interference device in a motor vehicle, and also addresses its sale for that use. Do not treat a laser jammer as a detector.

03

Commercial vehicles have a separate federal restriction

Federal regulation 49 CFR § 392.71 bars a driver from using a radar detector in a commercial motor vehicle and from operating one equipped with or containing a detector. A Texas route does not remove this federal restriction. If you drive a commercial vehicle, consult your carrier’s compliance team and the regulation.

04

Does mounting a detector change the answer?

The Texas provision reviewed here concerns interference devices, while federal commercial-vehicle rules address detector use and presence in the vehicle. Separate rules may govern visibility, windshield attachments or vehicle equipment. Follow the detector maker’s mounting directions and check applicable local and federal requirements for your vehicle.

05

What to check before using a detector in Texas

Identify whether your vehicle is a private passenger vehicle or a commercial motor vehicle, and whether the product only detects signals or can transmit interference. Read the current statutory text and any relevant federal rule. A detector is not permission to speed; obey posted limits and drive safely.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

Is a radar detector illegal in Texas in a regular car?

The Texas statute cited here prohibits radar interference devices; it does not state a general ban on ordinary passive detectors in private passenger cars. Device features and other applicable rules can matter.

Are radar jammers illegal in Texas?

Yes. Texas Transportation Code § 547.616 prohibits using, attempting to use, installing or operating a device intended to interfere with law-enforcement radar or laser speed measurement in a motor vehicle.

Can I use a radar detector in a commercial truck in Texas?

No. Federal regulation 49 CFR § 392.71 prohibits using a detector in a commercial motor vehicle and operating a commercial motor vehicle that contains one.

Does Texas law treat laser jammers like radar detectors?

Texas § 547.616 covers devices intended to interfere with radar or laser speed-measuring equipment. A laser jammer can fall within that description; a passive detector has a different function.

Can I mount a radar detector on my windshield in Texas?

The cited Texas interference-device section does not settle every mounting or visibility rule. Check current vehicle-equipment requirements and the manufacturer’s mounting instructions before attaching a device.
