01
What California law says about detectors
California Vehicle Code section 28150 targets equipment designed to jam, scramble, neutralize, disable or otherwise interfere with law-enforcement speed measurement. That wording distinguishes an active jammer from a receive-only detector. Read the current statutory text before relying on a general summary.
02
Where you mount the device matters
Section 26708 governs objects attached to vehicle windows and lists exceptions. A device that blocks the driver’s clear view can raise a separate issue from whether the detector itself is permitted. Consider a dashboard mount and follow the vehicle and detector manuals.
03
Commercial vehicles follow a federal rule
Federal motor carrier regulations prohibit a driver from using a radar detector in a commercial motor vehicle, or operating a commercial motor vehicle that is equipped with or contains one. Do not apply passenger-car guidance to a commercial vehicle.
04
Keep detectors and jammers separate
A detector listens for signals; a jammer is intended to interfere with measurement. California’s section 28150 addresses jamming, and the FCC says intentional interference with licensed radio communications is prohibited. A product name is not enough to establish how a device works.
05
Check the route and current rules
Rules differ across state lines and may change. Check the current state code, federal rules for your vehicle class, and local mounting restrictions before a trip. This guide is general information, not legal advice.
Common questions
Questions before you buy
Are radar detectors legal in California?
California Vehicle Code section 28150 prohibits devices that jam, scramble, neutralize, disable or interfere with speed measurement equipment. It does not describe ordinary receive-only radar detectors; windshield placement and federal commercial vehicle rules are separate issues.
Can I mount a radar detector on my windshield in California?
California Vehicle Code section 26708 restricts objects affixed to vehicle windows, with defined exceptions. Check the current statute and mount instructions; a dashboard location avoids relying on a windshield exception.
Are radar jammers the same as radar detectors?
No. A detector receives signals; a jammer transmits or interferes with measurement equipment. California law specifically addresses jamming devices, and the FCC also prohibits intentional interference with licensed communications.
Can commercial truck drivers use radar detectors in California?
Federal rules prohibit using or operating a commercial motor vehicle equipped with a radar detector. The federal rule applies regardless of California’s treatment of ordinary passenger cars.
