01
What states radar detector illegal rules cover?
For a private vehicle, the clear state-level restriction is Virginia: § 46.2-1079 bars operating a vehicle on Virginia highways when it is equipped with a device to detect or interfere with speed-measurement equipment. Washington, DC is not a state, but its municipal rule also restricts radar detectors in automobiles.
02
What about commercial vehicles?
Federal motor-carrier regulation separately says a driver may not use a radar detector in a commercial motor vehicle or operate one containing a detector. This rule is not limited to Virginia or DC, so drivers and carriers should check the vehicle classification and applicable federal requirements.
03
Does the law cover radar, laser and jammers alike?
Read the exact wording instead of treating every device as interchangeable. Virginia's statute names radar, laser and other speed-measurement devices, including devices that purposefully interfere with measurement; DC's regulation uses its own wording for devices used to detect or counteract police radar.
04
What should you check before crossing a border?
Check the current state code and local rules for every jurisdiction on your route, plus any commercial-vehicle or installation restrictions. A device allowed where you live may be prohibited once installed in or carried within a vehicle elsewhere.
05
Are camera-alert apps the same as radar detectors?
No: an app that uses GPS, a database or community reports is not the same mechanism as a receiver detecting radar emissions. Rules for phone use, windshield placement and camera alerts can still apply, so review those separately and set up the app before driving.

Questions before you buy
What states is a radar detector illegal in?
Virginia prohibits using a vehicle equipped with a detector on its highways. Washington, DC also has a restriction, though it is a federal district, not a state; commercial vehicles are covered by a separate federal rule.
Is a radar detector illegal in Virginia if it is turned off?
Virginia's statute addresses a vehicle equipped with a prohibited device, as well as its use. Do not assume switching it off makes carriage lawful; review the full statute or seek qualified legal advice.
Are police radar detectors illegal in all commercial vehicles?
Federal regulation bars use in a commercial motor vehicle and operation of one containing a detector. Confirm whether a specific vehicle meets the applicable regulatory definition.
Can I use a speed camera detector app in Virginia?
A phone app that reports known camera or police locations works differently from a radar receiver, but distracted-driving and other local rules still apply. Set routes before moving and follow current law.
