Can You Have a Radar Detector in Your Car in the United States?

It depends on the state and vehicle class. Virginia and Washington, D.C. restrict use, while federal rules apply to covered commercial vehicles.

Can You Have a Radar Detector in Your Car in the United States?
01

Can you have a radar detector in your car?

For a private passenger car, the answer depends on where you drive. Virginia prohibits operating a vehicle equipped with a device to detect or interfere with speed-measuring equipment; Washington, D.C. also restricts use. Commercial vehicle rules are separate.

02

Check the vehicle class

Federal regulation 49 CFR § 392.71 prohibits a driver from using a radar detector in a covered commercial motor vehicle or operating one equipped with a detector. Confirm whether your vehicle falls within the regulation.

03

Separate detectors from jammers

A passive detector receives signals. A jammer transmits or interferes with enforcement equipment and can face different restrictions. Do not assume the rules for one device type apply to the other.

04

Review mounting rules

Even where a detector is allowed, windshield obstruction and equipment-placement rules may apply. Choose a position that does not obstruct the driver view and check local requirements.

05

Check before a trip

Review current rules for every state on your route and the federal rule if you operate a commercial vehicle. Laws and device classifications can change.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

Can you have a radar detector in your car in every state?

No. Virginia and Washington, D.C. restrict radar detector use, and federal rules prohibit detectors in covered commercial motor vehicles. Check current law for your route.

Are radar detectors legal in Florida?

Florida statutes expressly prohibit signal jamming devices. That is distinct from passive radar detection; check current state law and the device type before travel.

Can truck drivers use radar detectors?

Federal regulation 49 CFR § 392.71 prohibits use in covered commercial motor vehicles and operation of one equipped with a detector.

Is a radar detector the same as a jammer?

No. A detector receives signals; a jammer is intended to interfere with measurement or communications and may be separately prohibited.
