How a Radar Detector Works and What It Can Detect

A radar detector scans for radio signals used by speed-measurement equipment and alerts the driver when it recognises one. It cannot guarantee an advance warning, and laser detection has different limits.

Radar detector how it works is a question about signals, not about spotting a police car. A detector listens for radio-frequency emissions from speed-measurement equipment, identifies patterns it is designed to recognise and gives an alert. The alert is information for the driver, not a guarantee that enforcement is nearby or that a warning will arrive in time.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

What does a radar detector actually detect?

It detects radio signals in supported frequency ranges that may be emitted by traffic radar. It does not identify police vehicles or prove that a speed check is taking place.

Can a radar detector detect laser speed guns?

Some detectors include laser sensors, but a laser alert may occur only after the vehicle is already being measured. Laser uses light pulses rather than the radio signals used by radar.

Why can a detector miss an instant-on radar?

An instant-on unit may transmit only briefly when activated. If there is no detectable signal reaching the receiver beforehand, an advance alert is not assured.

Do radar detectors work through windshields?

Many are designed for windshield mounting, but placement, windshield coatings, vehicle structure and the device's own instructions can affect reception. Follow the manufacturer’s mounting guidance.
