Laser Detector Sensors: How They Differ from Radar Detection

A laser detector sensor detects incoming infrared LIDAR light; it is separate from the radio receiver used for radar. Because LIDAR is tightly aimed, an alert may come only when your vehicle is measured.

A laser detector sensor is an optical receiver that senses infrared light from traffic LIDAR equipment. It is distinct from a radar detector’s radio-frequency receiver, even when both functions sit in the same device. The phrase laser detector sensor usually refers to this receiver or its optical sensing window.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

What does a laser detector sensor do?

It senses incoming infrared laser/LIDAR energy and sends an alert to the driver. It does not measure vehicle speed or guarantee advance warning.

Is a laser sensor the same as radar detection?

No. Radar uses radio-frequency signals, while traffic LIDAR uses infrared light. A combined detector needs separate sensing capability for each.

Can a laser detector give advance warning?

Not reliably. LIDAR uses a narrow beam aimed at a particular vehicle, so a detector may alert only when that vehicle is already being measured.

Does laser detection mean the device is a laser jammer?

No. Detection means receiving an incoming signal. A jammer is designed to interfere with the measurement process, and laws governing such equipment vary.
