Stealth Radar Detectors: Features and Limits to Check

“Stealth” usually refers to reducing detection by radar-detector detectors, not invisibility to police radar. Verify any claim against the manufacturer’s exact model documentation.

A stealth radar detector is generally marketed around reduced detectability by radar detector detectors (RDDs). That does not make it invisible to speed-measuring radar, laser or every RDD, and the word alone is not a performance guarantee. When comparing models, look for the specific RDD system named, the manufacturer’s explanation, and a manual that matches the exact unit. Check local restrictions too: federal rules prohibit detectors in commercial motor vehicles.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

What makes a radar detector stealth?

The term usually describes a design intended to reduce emissions detectable by an RDD. Ask which system and conditions the manufacturer refers to.

Are stealth radar detectors completely undetectable?

No broad guarantee follows from the word “stealth.” Performance depends on the detector, RDD and conditions; treat absolute claims cautiously.

Does stealth mean the detector blocks police radar?

No. Stealth claims concern detection of the detector itself. They do not mean the unit jams or blocks a speed-measuring signal.

Can commercial drivers use a stealth detector?

Federal regulation 49 CFR §392.71 prohibits radar detector use or possession in a commercial motor vehicle, regardless of stealth claims.
