How to Reprogram a NETGEAR WiFi Extender After a Router Change

If the old router is gone or settings no longer match, reset the extender and run setup again. A reset erases its saved network configuration.

How to Reprogram a NETGEAR WiFi Extender After a Router Change
01

Decide whether a reset is needed

If you can open the extender settings, try updating the router network name or password there first. A factory reset helps when the admin login is unavailable or the saved configuration cannot be recovered.

02

Reset the extender

Plug it in and wait for the Power LED to become steady. Press and hold Reset or Factory Reset until the Power LED blinks, then release it and let the extender restart. NETGEAR says this removes personalized settings.

03

Reconnect to setup

Connect a phone or computer to the extender default Wi-Fi network, then open NETGEAR extender setup or use its supported app flow. The default network name and local address vary by model.

04

Join the current router network

Select the current home Wi-Fi and enter its password carefully. If the router broadcasts separate bands, follow the prompts for the bands your extender supports.

05

Choose a location and confirm

Complete setup near the router, then move the extender where it still receives a usable signal. Check its status indicators and test a device in the weak area.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

Will reprogramming erase my NETGEAR extender settings?

A factory reset erases personalized settings, including saved network and security details. A change through the setup interface may not require a reset.

Do I need to reprogram an extender after changing routers?

You need to connect it to the new router network. If you cannot update the saved connection in its settings, reset it and run setup again.

Can I reprogram a NETGEAR extender without the old router?

Yes. A factory reset clears the stored configuration so you can set it up with the replacement router.

Why cannot I open the extender setup page?

Connect your phone or computer to the extender network and use the setup address for your model. If it remains inaccessible, restart it or reset it and begin setup again.
