How to Set Up a NETGEAR AC1200 WiFi Range Extender

The EX5000 can join a compatible router through WPS or a browser-based assistant. Configure it beside the router, then find a better midpoint for daily use.

How to Set Up a NETGEAR AC1200 WiFi Range Extender
01

Start close to the router

For the initial connection, place the NETGEAR EX5000 in the same room as the router and plug it into an outlet. Wait for the Power LED; press the unit’s Power button if it stays off.

02

Pair by pressing WPS

Press WPS on the extender until its indicator blinks, then press the router’s WPS control within two minutes. When the Router LED comes on, the link is established. If your router offers a 5 GHz network, repeat the pairing steps for that band.

03

Set up from a browser when needed

For routers without usable WPS, connect your setup device to NETGEAR_EXT. Browse to mywifiext.net and follow the NETGEAR installation assistant. The assistant is the route the quick-start guide specifies for hidden WiFi networks and WEP-protected networks.

04

Choose the extended network

After WPS setup, look for the existing network name with _2GEXT or _5GEXT appended, depending on the band. During assistant setup, follow the credentials you chose in its prompts. Connect a nearby phone or laptop to check that the extender network is visible.

06

Keep expectations realistic

A range extender repeats a connection that it can receive; walls, interference, router placement and device capabilities affect the result. If the far room still has poor service, try another outlet with a clearer path or consult the EX5000 user manual for troubleshooting.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

How long do I have to press the router’s WPS button?

NETGEAR’s EX5000 quick-start instructions say to press the router’s WPS button within two minutes after starting WPS on the extender.

Does the EX5000 support both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz?

NETGEAR describes the EX5000 as dual-band. Its quick-start guide says to repeat WPS pairing for 5 GHz when the router supports that band.

What network name does the EX5000 create?

After WPS pairing, the guide shows the router name with _2GEXT and _5GEXT suffixes for the extended networks. The browser assistant uses the credentials selected during setup.

Can I set up the extender in the room with weak WiFi?

NETGEAR recommends initial setup in the same room as the router. Once connected, move it toward the dead zone while keeping it within the router’s coverage.
