Rear Dash Cam Installation: Placement, Wiring and Setup

A tidy rear-camera setup begins with the correct cable length and a position that keeps the lens inside the wiper sweep. Decide whether you need recording only or reversing assistance before routing anything.

A rear dash cam install is mostly a planning job: check the rear-camera connector, measure the cable route and choose a lens position with a clear view before removing trim. Hatchbacks need enough cable slack at the hinge, while sedans usually allow a simpler run along the headliner and pillar trim.

Dash Cam Installation: How to Fit One in Your Car

Mount the camera high behind the rear-view mirror, keep it outside your driving view and route the power cable clear of airbags. A plug-in installation is simplest; hardwiring is for supported parking modes.

Questions before you buy

Where should a rear dash cam be mounted?

Mount it high and near the centre of the rear glass, within the cleared area of the rear wiper where possible. Check that defroster lines, tint edges and trim do not block the lens.

Can a rear dash cam cable cross an airbag?

Do not route a cable over or in front of a curtain airbag. Follow the vehicle service guidance or use a qualified installer if the safe path behind trim is unclear.

How do you wire a rear camera through a hatch?

Use the existing rubber wiring conduit only if the connector fits without force and leave enough slack for full hatch movement. Avoid pinching the cable or drilling unless the camera maker provides a suitable method.

Does a rear dash cam need a hardwire kit?

Not for ordinary driving recording if it receives power from the front unit. A compatible hardwire kit may be required for parking recording, depending on the system.
