WiFi Connection Boosters: Better Links in Weak Areas

A WiFi connection booster can extend access where the router signal is weak, but it cannot fix every dropped connection. Diagnose the weak link before adding hardware.

A WiFi connection booster may help a phone, laptop or smart TV that loses WiFi in one part of the home. Note whether the connection drops only in that location or across every room. A localized issue points toward coverage or interference; a whole-home outage can involve the router, modem or internet service. Choose an extender that supports your router’s bands and security, then install it where the original connection remains dependable. For stationary devices, Ethernet from an extender or access point can be useful. See the broader coverage guide for placement advice and compare Canada models before buying.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

Why does my WiFi keep disconnecting in one room?

Distance, walls, interference or a poor router location can weaken the link. Check another device in that room and inspect the router or extender signal before changing settings.

Will a WiFi connection booster stop buffering?

It may help if weak WiFi in that room causes buffering. Streaming can also be limited by internet service, congestion or the device, so confirm the cause first.

Can an extender improve a wired internet connection?

An extender can provide an Ethernet port for a nearby device, but its upstream connection still depends on the router link. An access point connected by Ethernet provides a direct wired backhaul.

Does a WiFi booster need the same brand as the router?

Not necessarily for basic WiFi extension. Brand-specific mesh and roaming features may require matching compatible products, so check both manuals.
